Do you see the Harry the rabbit sitting in the geraniums? OK—it’s not a very wild animal. In fact, it’s not even real. But this reminds me how my geraniums actually were eaten by wild animals last year.

In my backyard labyrinth, I always set potted plants at the labyrs (turns). Last spring, I set out a dozen geraniums while being watched by a deer just forty feet away on the edge of my back property line. A few days later, half of the plants had been nibbled by the deer…or the real, live rabbits that multiply under my shed?
I should have figured out that I needed to do something, because by the end of the week only a few leaves were left on all of the dozen plants. Who knew that geraniums tasted so good?
This major setback led to major disappointment because most of the color of the plantings were gone. Then, I figured out that if in each pot I “planted” foot-high trimmings from my boxwood hedge, the remaining geranium leaves wouldn’t be eaten.
Have you ever experienced a disappointment? Did you find a way forward?
